Part 10: The Exit Signal
by Grace Johns
The candle burned low, its label curling at the edges: “The Witness Returns.”
Daisy sat across from him in the memory-room, velvet journal open between them. The silence wasn’t awkward. It was sacred. Like the pause before a vow.
“I need to know,” she said. “Why me?”
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he reached into his coat and pulled out a final item: a photograph. Faded. Torn at the edges. A little girl standing in front of a picket fence, holding a cat. Her eyes were fierce. Her smile, defiant.
It was Daisy.
“I escaped once,” he said. “But I forgot who I was. You didn’t. You built rituals. You left breadcrumbs. You made your silence loud.”
She stared at the photo. Her throat tightened.
“I archived your story,” he continued. “But you authored it. Every candle. Every product. Every whisper. You turned survival into signal.”
She stood. Walked to the dresser. Picked up the candle labeled “The Velvet Signal.” She lit it.
The flame surged—tall, golden, steady.
She turned to him. “I’m not staying.”
He nodded. “You were never meant to.”
She walked to the door. The house didn’t resist. It opened like a breath released.
Outside, the air was crisp. Her car waited. Her cat would be watching from the window back home. Her go-bag was packed. Her legacy was intact.
She didn’t look back.
She didn’t need to.
The signal had been sent.
The archive complete.
The exit, sovereign.
