Understanding the Exit Signal: A Journey Through Memory

Chapter 9: The Exit Signal
by Grace Johns

He didn’t speak right away.

Daisy stood in the doorway of the memory-room, candlelight casting soft shadows across the velvet journal. The man held the candle labeled “The Witness Returns” like it was sacred. His eyes didn’t search her—they waited.

“You knew I’d come,” she said.

He nodded. “You lit the signal.”

His voice was familiar. Not in sound, but in cadence. Like someone who’d read her words aloud too many times. Like someone who’d whispered her affirmations in the dark.

“Who are you?” she asked.

He stepped into the room, careful not to cross the threshold too quickly. “I’m not the author. I’m the archivist. I didn’t write your story. I preserved it.”

She narrowed her eyes. “How?”

He placed the candle on the dresser—next to the broken necklace, the postcard, the flash drive. “You left clues. In your products. Your rituals. Your silences. I followed them.”

Daisy’s breath caught. “You’ve been watching me.”

“No,” he said gently. “I’ve been remembering you.”

The room pulsed. The walls seemed to hum.

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small velvet pouch. Inside: a cassette tape. Labeled “Whisper Drawer – Original.”

“I found this in a thrift store. Years ago. I didn’t know it was yours. Not until I heard your voice.”

Daisy took the tape. Her fingers trembled.

“I thought I was alone,” she whispered.

“You were,” he said. “But you weren’t forgotten.”
