Chapter 5: The Exit Signal
by Grace Johns
The flash drive was matte black, unmarked except for the words Crestwood Lane etched in faint silver. Daisy hesitated before plugging it in. Her laptop screen flickered once, then opened a single folder.
Inside:
- A video file titled “House #420”
- A document named “Velvet Rituals – Archive”
- A sound file labeled “Someday.wav”
She clicked the video first.
It was grainy footage of a cottage. White picket fence. Flower garden. A cat in the window. Her dream home—exactly as she’d described it in her journal, in her manifestation rituals, in whispers no one else should’ve heard.
The camera panned slowly. A voice spoke, low and steady:
“She dreamed this before she knew it was real. She named it before she saw it. She claimed it before she arrived.”
Daisy’s hands trembled. She paused the video and opened the document.
It was a list. Candle names. Affirmations. Product slogans. All hers. But annotated—like someone had been studying them. Decoding them. Each entry had a note beside it:
- “Emotional Evacuation” → “Used during packing ritual. Timestamp: 4:20 a.m.”
- “Unseen Doesn’t Mean Untrue” → “Lit after first message received. Emotional spike detected.”
- “I Said What I Said” → “Worn during silent confrontation. Power surge.”
She closed the document. Her breath shallow. Her cat meowed once—sharp, urgent.
She clicked the sound file.
It was her own voice. Younger. Whispering:
“You will have a house with a picket fence. You will have a cat who knows your name…”
She stopped the playback. That recording had never been digital. It was from the Whisper Drawer. From a cassette tape she’d buried in a box years ago.
Someone had found it. Digitized it. And sent it back.
The watcher wasn’t just observing.
He was archiving her soul.
