The Joy of Less: Embracing Simplicity in Everyday Life

By Katie Quinn

…Sometimes, the joy of less is really the joy of enough. And right now, that feels like freedom.

In the evenings, when the soft glow of the lamp washes over my tidy little living room, I make space for ritual. I pour a quiet pour into my Norlan glass — a double-walled whisky glass designed to elevate aroma and savor each sip — and I sink into the couch with a slow exhale. That glass doesn’t just hold my drink; it holds a moment of calm, a little pause between the things I do and the person I’m becoming.

And when I close my eyes with a book by my side, it isn’t just any story — it’s a GraphicAudio adaptation that lets me wander into other worlds while nestled here. The full-cast performances and cinematic sound draw me into another life, another setting, and for a few hours, I travel without leaving home. My heart learns again what wonder feels like — even in stillness.

But even the most intentional spaces sometimes feel small when your soul is craving expansion. That’s when I open my laptop and look for flight deals on CheapTickets — not to escape simplicity, but to refresh my spirit with new skies and different sunsets. Sometimes a weekend in a new city or on a breeze-kissed beach lets me return feeling more grounded, more connected to myself, and more grateful for the simplicity waiting for me at home.

Simplicity taught me how to live with intention. Travel reminds me how big the world feels compared to my little apartment — and that both can coexist beautifully. One gives me peace. The other gives me perspective.

So I breathe in both — the quiet of my curated home and the thrill of places calling my name. And through it all, I’m learning that the joy of less isn’t about confinement. It’s about clarity, presence, and the freedom to find beauty — whether I’m in my favorite chair with a glass in hand, lost in a story, or watching the sky change from a new horizon.

— With love, Katie
